Reflection
During this project I felt that I learnt a lot, not just about Thailand's contribution to World War 2 but about myself as a learner.
I started off my project just researching the Thai-Burma Railway but after researching I found that the Thai people were not heavily involved. I then decided to change my topic and broaden it so that it covered Thailand in all aspects of World War 2 from the Thai-Franco war to the exit of the Japanese and end of war. It meant that I could focus more on the view of, and effect on, the Thai people rather than Australia and the Western world's view of the events. This, although I think it was a good decision, put me behind schedule so I only finished researching in week 2 of Term 2.
One of my favourite parts of this project was the freedom, being able to research anything at all about Thailand and presenting it any way you like. I enjoyed that I could research a topic I was interested in and wanted to learn about. I could also be creative with ways I presented.
I would also say that this was one of my least favourite parts of the project. I found that the lack of structure given made it hard for me to start the project and organise my time effectively. It took me too long to find out my topic wasn't going to make an effective project as it was the first term holidays then. The first term for me was highly unproductive and although I read lots of articles I wasn't finding anything of use or writing enough down. The second term I was a lot more productive and the bulk of my work was done then.
One part of this ILP I didn't like was that it was a long project. Even when I was on top of all my homework I didn't like the fact that it was always hanging over me and I always felt like I was behind. I think it would have been much more enjoyable if I had organised my time better and at the start had a week by week plan of what I was to complete. I must make sure to do this next time. I also found it hard in second term as there was only 1 tutor group and I hadn't spoken to my tutor enough in the first term.
Next time I want to make sure I have a much clearer idea of my project before I start. This time it took me 2 weeks to find a topic and then quite a few more until I found out it wouldn't work. Having a clear idea and then researching well will make it lots more enjoyable. I also want to get more information in the first term so I will know that I can find enough information. I want to have a calendar and clearly mark when I will finish research and when I will need to be at a certain point. I will need to stick to this to avoid doing lots of work in the final two weeks of ILP.
Overall I enjoyed learning about Thailand's history and doing a project different to everything else I have done at school. I feel I have learnt a lot about Thai history and culture.
